South Bay, FL

This is where I spent my sewing retreat last week - South Bay Campground.  It is owned and operated by Palm Beach County and located on the far west side of the town of the same name  near the Lake Ockeechobee Levee.   We pass this campground every time we make a trip to Ortona.  I drove thru it one summer a few years ago for a looksee and I was impressed.  After a week of staying onsite,  I’m still impressed.  With the campground.  The town of South Bay… not so much.  It’s just very rural, under developed and a few delapidated homes, trailers, etc. There are some gas stations with small food marts, but I did not check them out.

So here is a little pictorial - click on pics to enlarge.  For $27.95 / day you get …

A paved site with full hookups (yes, including sewer), mix of 30/50 amp, cable TV (lots of stations) and free WiFi.

We had site 158.

The Wifi was screaming fast the first 2 days, then they had troubles.  It was being worked on for a long time one day.  Back up by the end of the week but not near as fast.  Maybe they are not done with the fixes?  I did not ask.

Weekly discounts available.  Extended stays permitted, but I don’t recall the specifics.   The 30 amp sites back up to the fishing lake and the 50 amp sites line the outside perimeter.   A lot of road noise in the CG, but you can reduce some of it if you get a site in the loop near the levee.

If you click on the South Bay link above you’ll see a nice aerial view of the CG and how close it is to the levee.  There is a walking path along the levee that goes for miles and miles.

Two bath houses with 2 washer and dryers and folding tables in each one.  As well as  2 shower/dressing rooms.  Some wear and tear showing on the floors, counter tops, mirrors etc.  And the washer and dryers are showing some rust, but this building has no A/C so it doesn’t surprise me. Nothing in Florida lasts long w/out A/C.

Recreation center with air conditioned game room (pool table & TV).  Screened-in eating area with outside BBQ grills.

Right outside the recreation center - shuffleboard, swings, and fenced-in playground area

Beautiful fishing lake surrounded by a lighted pathway.  Paved most of the way - just the North end is still gravel.

The closest grocery is in Belle Glade (7 miles).   We did not check it out - we went the other direction for services.  Clewiston is 16 miles west directly off Rt 27 where you’ll find a Super Walmart, McDonalds, Walgreens, Burger King , KFC and several local restaurants.

We had breakfast at the Clewiston Inn (not that great) and dinner @ The Happy Chef Diner on our last night.  Now that was great.  So great — I took pictures of the food.  I never do that.

Homemade strawberry butter with bread sticks.  Yum Yum.

I had the prime rib, their special that night.  Tom had pork chops.  It was all fabulous, but neither of us could clean our plates.  Not pictured — homemade onion rings and two glasses of wine.  We rolled home.  :-)

South Bay and The Happy Chef — two great places stuck in the middle of nowhere, but we’ll be back.

It sure is in the middle of no where! I've driven through there going from Loxahatchee to Clewiston ... Is Clewiston Inn the place with the large covered deck? If so, I agree with you about the food (and the service any time we've been there was horrific)

We just returned home from our winter trip tonight. And I came across your South Bay entry. Somehow I missed it back in January. Looks really nice. Who knows - we may end up staying there for a few days next year. Florida was great this winter! Really made up for last year's cold weather. Can't wait to go back next year. :) Just wanted to say thanks for all the S. Bay pics. Oh, and I can't wait to see your master BR redo's. Have fun!
